Jessica Ma, who has been an ICB student Administrative Assistant for the last two years, was commissioned Second Lieutenant on Friday, June 12, 2015 in an Army Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC), Surfrider Battalion program ceremony held at Goleta Beach, honoring fourteen graduates.
While Jessica completed her Bachelor of Arts degree in Chinese and Global Studies at UCSB (she received a two year Army ROTC Scholarship), she worked for the ICB providing invaluable support in multiple areas such as Contracts & Grants, Personnel and Operations.
At 22, Second Lieutenant Ma, a native of Oakland, California, has plans to attend the University of California Hastings College of Law in San Francisco and will branch Judge Advocate General's (JAG) Corps upon receiving her Juris Doctorate. Judge Advocates provide legal councel to the various commands of the U.S. Armed Forces.
The Army ROTC program at UCSB is not only academically demanding, but is well known throughout the nation as one of the top ROTC units. Army ROTC enhances a student's education and provides unique educational opportunities by combining leadership and management theory with actual hands-on experience. Army ROTC develops self-discipline, physical stamina, leadership, management skills and many other qualities essential to success in life.
