Biofilm Community Dynamics in Electrogenic Wastewater Microbial Fuel Cells

The microbial population on the electrode surfaces in microbial fuel cells can be tailored to engineer biofilms capable of removing carbon waste in wastewater with the concomitant production of electrical power.

This project seeks to understand biofilm consortia in microbial fuel cells treated with synthetic additives that enable generation of electrical output with concomitant accelerated consumption of carbon contaminants.  Completion of the studies would enable us to use naturally occurring microbial diversity for the design of biofilms that can remove carbon waste from municipal wastewater and obtain electrical power.
