Incorporating Synthetic Biomolecule Functionalities into Robust Abiotic Films and Fibers

Synthetic biomolecules are promising for their diverse and tunable properties, but there are significant challenges in how to integrate them into engineered materials. We propose to combine biotechnology methods with materials synthesis techniques to incorporate synthetic biomolecules with technologically important functionalities into robust polymeric or hybrid solids. A primary objective will be to determine the ranges of compatible conditions, material compositions, and tolerances over which synthetic biomolecules maintain their functionalities and to understand their effects and those of contaminants on material properties. The resulting scientific insights would aid the development of functional soldier apparel, reactive or responsive skins, dynamic opto-electronic devices, energy-efficient purifications, and other applications relevant to the Army.
