DNA-Programmed Shape Evolution of Colloidal Crystals

DNA is a powerful tool for materials synthesis via directed assembly, as predictable base pairing interactions between complementary DNA sequences allow for the formation of precise nanoscale structures. By grafting the surface of an inorganic particle with multiple DNA strands, DNA duplexes can selectively “bond” nanoparticles into ordered superlattice architectures. In this project, we examine the shape-evolution of DNA-directed superlattices from individual DNA-grafted particles into superlattices of well-defined nano- and mesoscale structures in order to both provide better understanding of crystallization behavior and to more precisely tailor the physical properties of these DNA-based materials.
