We use spatially structured synthetic microbial communities to understand and control the interactions among microbes, to examine heterogeneity in production of metabolites, and to induce microbes to produce new functional molecules.
Microbial communities perform essential functions in the environment and produce compounds that are used in many industries, but microbe-microbe interactions are not well understood. We will develop microfluidic chips to measure and understand microbial interactions and the compounds they produce when they are in competition for nutrients with each other.
