A two input event detector in cells would be able to detect the order in which events occurred, combined with a memory module that uses two invertases and nested invertase recognition sites to “memorize” whether an event occurred using DNA.
We are developing a family of biomolecular “event detectors” that make use of synthetic biological components to recognize chemical species in a cell’s environment and detect temporal relationships between individual species. Our approach provides a modular approach to integrate elementary detection functions to achieve circuits that provide robust detection and response of complex chemical signatures. The use of new biological methods for environmental diagnostics has potential use in protecting people from biological hazards as well as environmental remediation. In addition, there are potential uses of similar techniques in other areas of synthetic, including materials production and biomedical applications.
