A cartoon representation of the pathway of electron flow through the MtrCAB system of Shewanella. Reducing equivalents produced in the cytoplasm flow through inner membrane and then are transferred to MtrA that is attached to the porin MtrB. Electrons flow to MtrC and then to the environment (after Richardson, et al, Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci. US, 110, 7537-7538, 2013).
Bacteria and other microorganisms are compex chemical factories that can both synthesize and degrade molecules as part of their metabolism. Our aim is to understand and control these microscopic factories to generate electrical energy from a variety of sources including waste water.
